What Is a Ford Powershift Transmission?
01
Ford's Dual-Clutch Automatic System: Powershift is Ford’s brand name for its dual-clutch automated manual transmissions. Like other dual-clutch systems, it uses two separate clutches—one for odd gears (1st, 3rd, 5th) and one for even gears (2nd, 4th, 6th) and reverse.
This allows the transmission to pre-select the next gear for fast, seamless shifting without a traditional torque converter. Learn more about mechanical differences in our Ford Powershift Authority Guide.
02
Two Distinct Powershift Families: Ford uses two different Powershift designs depending on engine size and vehicle weight:
- 6DCT250 (Dry Clutch): Fitted to smaller petrol models (Fiesta, Focus 1.0/1.6, EcoSport, B-Max). Operated via electric clutch actuator motors.
- 6DCT450 (Wet Clutch): Fitted to larger diesel models (Mondeo, Kuga, S-Max, Galaxy 2.0 TDCi). Operated via hydraulic fluid and oil-immersed clutches.

What Causes Powershift Transmission Faults?
01
Dry-Clutch 6DCT250 Issues (Fiesta, Focus):
- Input Shaft Seal Leakage: Transmission oil weeping past the input shaft seals contaminates the dry clutch friction discs, causing severe shuddering.
- TCM Module Failure: Internal micro-welds inside the Transmission Control Module (mounted on the gearbox casing) fatigue from heat and vibration.
- Actuator Motor Seizing: Electric actuator motors that push the clutch forks can stick or wear out.
02
Wet-Clutch 6DCT450 Issues (Mondeo, Kuga, S-Max):
- Damaged Plastic Clutch Retainers: Internal plastic spring retainers inside the wet clutch damper can shatter over time, circulating debris through the valve body.
- Solenoid Contamination: Debris clogs the hydraulic valve body solenoids, causing harsh thuds or complete loss of gear selection.
- Overdue Fluid Service: Wet-clutch Powershift gearboxes require regular oil and filter changes to prevent solenoid scoring.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions About Powershift Repairs
Does a juddering Powershift always mean the whole gearbox is broken?
No. In many cases, replacing the clutch pack and upgraded input shaft seals solves the shuddering without needing an entire replacement gearbox.
Can you collect my Ford if it has lost reverse gear?
Yes. We arrange flatbed vehicle collection across 45 covered service areas in England and Wales.
How long does a Powershift rebuild take?
Turnaround is typically 3 to 7 working days from vehicle collection and diagnostic assessment.
Does the new TCM module need programming?
Yes. The replacement TCM is electronically coded and software-calibrated to your specific Ford vehicle identification number (VIN).
