- Engine flaring on acceleration: You press the pedal to overtake or climb a hill, the RPM needle jumps up, but the car feels sluggish or floats forward slowly.
- Sudden RPM flare during gear shifts: In an automatic or dual-clutch car, the engine revs flare momentarily between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th before engaging abruptly with a thud.
- Delay when pulling away: You press the throttle from a standstill, the engine races, and then drive takes hold suddenly.

What Could Cause Slipping? (Symptom ≠ Diagnosis)

In automatic transmissions, low fluid pressure prevents internal clutch packs from clamping tightly. A simple leak or degraded oil can trigger slipping before mechanical damage occurs.
2. Worn Clutch Friction Discs

On manual cars and dual-clutch (DSG) models, friction material naturally thins over time. When worn below minimum thickness, the clutch can no longer transfer engine torque.
3. Torque Converter or Valve Body
