TORQUE CONVERTER
REPAIR & DIAGNOSTICS.

If your automatic car shudders at certain speeds, feels like it is slipping on gentle acceleration, or produces an unusual vibration through the cabin, the torque converter may need assessment. A fault here does not always mean you need an entire replacement gearbox.

What Is a Torque Converter and What Does It Do?

01
The Fluid Link Between Engine & Gearbox: In a conventional automatic car, there is no foot clutch. Instead, a torque converter acts as a fluid coupling between the engine and the gearbox. Filled with transmission oil, it allows the engine to keep running smoothly while you are stopped in gear at traffic lights, and multiplies engine power when you press the accelerator to move away.
02
The Lock-Up Clutch: At cruising speeds (such as on dual carriageways or motorways), an internal lock-up clutch engages inside the torque converter to lock the engine directly to the transmission, improving fuel efficiency. When this internal friction lining wears or the control valve sticks, you may notice a distinct shudder or surging sensation that feels like driving over rumble strips.

How We Check and Diagnose Torque Converter Faults

01
Why Diagnosis Comes First: A symptom like shuddering or slipping is not an automatic proof that the torque converter must be replaced. Similar symptoms can be caused by:
  • Degraded, low, or contaminated automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
  • A sticking solenoid valve inside the hydraulic valve body.
  • Internal gearbox clutch pack wear.
  • Engine misfires or worn engine mounts mimicking drivetrain vibration.
02
Can the Torque Converter Be Repaired Separately?: Yes. If diagnostic tests confirm that the main gearbox internals are healthy and fluid contamination is minimal, the torque converter can be removed, reconditioned with new internal bearings and lock-up clutch linings, or replaced with a remanufactured unit. This avoids the cost of replacing the complete transmission assembly.

TRANSMISSION GUIDANCE & OVERVIEW

01
What Affects the Repair Cost?: Pricing depends on your vehicle make and model, the transmission model (such as ZF 6HP/8HP, Mercedes 7G/9G-Tronic, or Aisin), and whether a torque converter replacement or full transmission overhaul is required. We provide clear, itemised estimates after reviewing your registration details and reported symptoms. Get a Diagnostic Estimate

Frequently Asked Questions About Torque Converters

Does a torque converter fault mean I need a whole new gearbox?

No. If the main gear sets and clutch packs inside the gearbox are undamaged, replacing or reconditioning the torque converter alone can resolve the issue.

Can you collect my car if the vibration makes it unpleasant to drive?

Yes. We arrange dedicated vehicle transporter collection across 45 covered service areas in England and Wales.

How long does a torque converter replacement take?

Turnaround typically takes between 3 to 7 working days from vehicle collection, diagnostic inspection, and parts fitting.

Will a fluid change fix torque converter shudder?

In very early stages of fluid degradation, fresh transmission fluid can sometimes improve lock-up clutch operation. However, if the internal friction material is physically worn, replacement is required.
