Distributing Power to All Four Wheels: The transfer box (also known as a transfer case) is a specialised drivetrain gearbox mounted behind your main transmission on four-wheel-drive (4WD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles.
Its job is to take rotational power from the main gearbox and split it between the front and rear axles, allowing all four wheels to drive the vehicle.

- Stretched Drive Chain: In chain-driven transfer boxes (such as BMW xDrive ATC35L/ATC450), continuous torque transfer stretches the chain over time, causing it to skip teeth under load.
- Actuator Motor / Resistor Failure: The electric servo motor controlling the internal multi-plate clutch can wear out its internal nylon gears or strip teeth.
- Uneven Tyre Circumference: Mismatched tyre brands, uneven tread depths, or incorrect tyre pressures force the transfer box to work continuously, causing clutch plate overheating and fluid degradation.
