What Could Cause Loss of Reverse? (Symptom ≠ Diagnosis)
1. Electronic & Hydraulic Controls

In dual-clutch and automatic transmissions, a control module or solenoid issue in the mechatronic or valve body can prevent fluid pressure from engaging the reverse clutch circuit.
2. Worn Reverse Brake Band or Valve

In conventional automatics, reverse requires high hydraulic pressure to clamp the reverse clutch pack and brake band. A sticking valve body solenoid or worn piston seal causes total loss of reverse clamping.
3. Manual Selector Linkage Cable

On manual cars, reverse often has a dedicated reverse-lockout cable or gate trigger on the gear stick. A stretched cable prevents the linkage from pushing the internal selector fork fully into reverse engagement.
