TRANSMISSION NOISE SYMPTOM GUIDE

GEARBOX KNOCKING NOISE:
BEARING & MOUNT CAUSES.

Hearing a repetitive knocking, clicking, or heavy metallic clunking noise from underneath your car is unsettling. While some knocking sounds stem from external suspension or engine mounts, others indicate mechanical wear inside the differential or gearbox.

What Does the Driver Notice?

01
Drivers typically experience this issue through distinct driving sensations and conditions:
  • Rhythmic knocking that matches road speed:: A continuous 'knock-knock-knock' or clicking sound that speeds up as you accelerate and slows down as the car decelerates.
  • Single loud clunk when selecting gear:: A distinct mechanical thump when shifting from Neutral into 1st gear, or between Drive and Reverse on an automatic.
  • Knocking in neutral that stops when pressing clutch:: A rattling or knocking noise while idling with the clutch pedal released, which completely disappears when you depress the clutch pedal to the floor.
  • Knocking worse when turning corners:: The clicking or knocking intensifies when accelerating around tight bends or turning at junctions.
02
How Serious Might It Be?: A knocking noise indicates physical free play, component wear, or broken gear teeth. Ignoring a metallic knock can allow small fractured metal fragments to circulate through internal bearings, turning an isolated component issue into a total casing failure.

Can I Keep Driving?

Evaluating whether your vehicle is safe to drive or requires immediate recovery:

When Short Careful Trips May Be Feasible

If the knock is a light, intermittent click during slow manoeuvres, driving gently at moderate speeds directly to a diagnostic assessment is feasible.

When You Should Stop Driving

If you hear loud, heavy metallic banging under load, if the car shudders violently, or if the transmission grinds continuously, stop driving. Arranged transporter recovery ensures the vehicle is transported without risking wheel or transmission lock-up.

What Could Cause It? (Symptom ≠ Diagnosis)

1. Broken or Chipped Gear Tooth

If a single tooth on a gear hub or final drive pinion chips from shock loading, it produces a rhythmic knock once every shaft rotation under load.

2. Differential Planet & Sun Gear Wear

The internal differential allows left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds. Excessive backlash between worn differential spider gears causes noticeable knocking during acceleration changes and cornering.

3. Worn Dual-Mass Flywheel (DMF)

The dual-mass flywheel contains internal arc springs to absorb engine pulses. When springs fatigue or internal grease dries out, the two masses knock together loudly at idle.

Could It Be Something Other Than the Gearbox?

Could It Be Something Other Than the Gearbox?

Yes. Very often, what sounds like a gearbox knock is actually an external drivetrain component. Worn constant velocity (CV) joints on driveshafts, a deteriorated lower gearbox dog-bone engine mount, or a loose anti-roll bar drop link can produce identical knocking sensations in the cabin.

How We Diagnose and Resolve This Issue

How We Diagnose and Resolve This Issue

Diagnostic Step-by-Step

  • Raised workshop ramp test with chassis stethoscope to pinpoint noise origin
  • Driveshaft radial play and CV joint boot inspection
  • Engine and transmission mounting bush leverage check
  • Magnetic gearbox drain plug inspection for large metallic debris

Potential Repair Pathways

What Factors Influence the Repair Cost?

What Factors Influence the Repair Cost?

If diagnosis confirms the knock is caused by an external engine mount or CV driveshaft joint, the repair is rapid and economical. If the sound originates from internal differential bearings or damaged gear teeth, the gearbox will require removal and rebuild. We confirm the exact cause before any work commences.
