If the 'P-R-N-D-S' gear selection letters or the gear number indicator on your Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, or Škoda instrument cluster are flashing, the transmission control unit has detected an operational fault and activated a protective failsafe mode. Here is what is happening and what to do next.
What Does the Driver Notice?
- Flashing gear letters:: The entire PRNDS row on your digital dashboard flashes on and off simultaneously, or a spanner symbol appears next to the gear display.
- Loss of certain gears:: The car may only drive in odd gears (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th) or even gears (2nd, 4th, 6th), completely losing Reverse or skipping gears during acceleration.
- Delayed or no throttle response:: The car enters a protective limp mode, dulling throttle response and restricting engine RPM to protect internal components.
- Refusal to start or restart:: The vehicle may fail to crank if the control unit cannot verify that the transmission is safely in Park or Neutral.

On 7-speed dry-clutch DSGs (DQ200), the hydraulic accumulator housing inside the mechatronic unit can develop micro-cracks. This prevents the electric hydraulic pump from maintaining pressure, triggering safety shutdown.
2. Transmission Control Module (TCU) Board Failure

The electronic circuit board submerged in the mechatronic unit suffers thermal stress and vibration, leading to internal solder joint cracks or failed speed and pressure sensors.
