CAR WON'T GO INTO GEAR:
CAUSES & SOLUTIONS.
When the gear stick feels completely blocked, requires excessive force, or grinds loudly when trying to select 1st or reverse, something is preventing the transmission from synchronising. Here is how to understand what is wrong and what steps to take next.
What Does the Issue Feel Like?
- Blocked gear stick when engine is running: The lever moves easily into all gears when the engine is turned off, but hits a brick wall as soon as the engine is started.
- Crunching into one specific gear: The gear lever goes into 1st, 3rd, 4th fine, but crunches loudly when attempting to shift into 2nd or reverse.
- Automatic lever locked in Park: The automatic gear selector button will not release from 'P', or shifting to 'D' does not engage drive.
Can I Keep Driving?
Evaluating whether your vehicle is safe to drive or requires immediate recovery:
Do Not Force the Lever
Forcing a stiff gear stick can bend external selector linkages or snap internal selector forks. If a gear does not enter smoothly, do not yank the lever.
Safe Transport Advice
If your car cannot safely engage 1st or reverse, attempting to drive in traffic is hazardous. Arranged transporter recovery allows the car to be loaded safely without drivetrain stress.
What Could Cause It? (Symptom ≠ Diagnosis)
1. Clutch Dragging (Hydraulic Failure)
⚠
If the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, or pressure plate fails, pressing the pedal does not fully disconnect the engine from the gearbox, keeping internal shafts spinning.
2. Worn Synchromesh Rings
⚠
Synchroniser brass rings match gear speeds before engagement. When worn, the gears spin at different speeds, blocking engagement or causing loud crunches.
3. Selector Cables & Bushings
⚠
Stretched or detached gear selector linkage cables underneath the battery tray or centre console can prevent the gearbox from physically reaching the required gear gate.
How We Diagnose and Resolve Selection Issues
How We Diagnose and Resolve Selection Issues
Diagnostic Step-by-Step
- Clutch pedal hydraulic pressure and fluid bleed check
- External gear selector cable alignment and bushing inspection
- Manual gearbox oil inspection for metallic synchromesh flakes
- Electronic brake interlock and shift solenoid testing on automatics
