What Does the Driver Notice?
- Stuck in 1st or 2nd gear:: The car moves away from rest, but no matter how fast you travel or how high the engine revs climb, the gearbox will not shift into the next gear.
- Refusing top overdrive gear on the motorway:: The car shifts through lower gears normally, but will not change into 6th, 7th, or 8th gear, causing excessive RPM and fuel consumption at 60–70 mph.
- Shifting only when lifting foot off the accelerator:: The car holds a lower gear until you completely release the throttle pedal, at which point it suddenly bangs into the next gear.
- Manual paddle or stick override not responding:: Tapping the steering wheel paddles or bumping the gear stick into '+' mode fails to command an upshift.

1. Faulty Transmission Speed Sensors (TSS / OSS)

The transmission control unit uses Turbine Speed Sensors (TSS) and Output Shaft Speed Sensors (OSS) to calculate when to command an upshift. If a sensor fails or sends distorted signals, the computer cannot verify shaft speeds and holds the current gear.
2. Sticking Shift Solenoid in the Valve Body

Hydraulic shift solenoids inside the valve body open and close to direct pressurised fluid to the next clutch pack. Sludge, metal debris, or electrical coil failure will prevent the solenoid from moving the shift spool.
3. Transmission Protective Limp Mode

When the transmission computer detects an internal pressure irregularity, clutch slippage, or temperature spike, it deliberately locks the transmission into a single safe gear (often 2nd or 3rd) to prevent catastrophic mechanical failure.
